The extended family is equally important to Charles-Alfred. One of its members, his brother Georges, will always be his right-hand man. This tall, jovial, very strong man will always stay near Charles-Alfred to serve him loyally. A jack of all trades, he will be what might be termed the bodyguard of his brother, but will also take on the role of protector of the members of his brother's family.

Joseph will go to the Collège de Lévis. However, his studies will be a source of conflict between his father and himself. As it happens, while Joseph is at the Collège, he asks his father if he can take music instead of engineering. Although, like many others, Charles-Alfred recognizes the musical talent of his son, he is not at all prepared to abandon his hopes for his only male successor because of a personal interest. He talks it over with the parish priest who backs him up. Joseph will have to pursue his studies in engineering. This decision will be at the heart of the stormy relationship between the father and son for years to come.
