Specialized record labels cultivated contacts with urban community radio stations in order to promote music that was excluded from the commercial airwaves. Several of the independent labels, including Justin Time, MMM (Musique Multi-Montréal), Musi-comptoir and Nuits d'Afrique, offered world music created by new immigrants to Quebec. The new interest in music from elsewhere can be attributed to an evolution in tastes, to globalization, the contribution of the cultural communities, and education.
