In 1987 Hawthorne Cottage and 3,500 artifacts were given to Parks Canada by the Honorable Mr. Justice Rupert W. Bartlett.

Hawthorne Cottage was a focal point in the social life of the town of Brigus. Through their many activities - sealing, fishing, and Arctic exploration - the Bartlett family reflected the way of life of a family, a community, and a province. They reached out far beyond the world of the outport village, and forged connections of international importance.

Through the work of the Newfoundland Historic Parks Association in partnership with Parks Canada, the cottage was opened to the public on June 27th, 1995.
