The history of the Historical Museum of Tracadie

The history of the Historical museum of Tracadie goes back to 1968 when sister Dorina Frigault opened a "mini-museum" on the occasion of the centennial celebration of the arrival of the Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph. She exposed a variety of objects related to the religious work in Tracadie.
The museum became more structured, became incorporated and augmented its collection during the 10 years that followed. This museum largely devoted to the history of the care given to the lepers, also contains many other ancient objects used in domestic work or in religious services, as well as various Indian artifacts found in Pointe-à-Tom, near Tracadie. Its specific vocation is to nevertheless become a museum oriented towards health care. More specifically, its role is to be based on the delivery of health care services dispensed to the lepers.

The construction of the Holy Family Academy began in 1910 and ended in 1912. It offered academic classes to boys and girls. It would later offer commercial, home economics, music and painting classes.
Before its construction, orphans were welcomed and stayed in one of the hospital wings. Taking care of the orphans was dear to the hearts of the nuns. Sisters Marie Anne Doucet and Isabelle Sormany (La Dauversière) were responsible for the layout of the academy. Room and board stopped in 1943 for the boys and in 1966 for the girls. This building now acts as the Historical Museum of Tracadie Inc. and is managed by the corporation of the alumni of the Holy Family Academy.
