The hospital has started to use preventative health care and educational programs to get patients involved in their own health care. This movement is intended to create a system where patients take measures to avoid sickness and extended hospital stays through healthy living.

For Bell Island, this system is showing positive effects in that it has brought the community together for a good cause. The whole community, including the RCMP, local educators, social workers, and the Wabana town council, are working towards a health care plan that targets the needs of the people.
