"I recall one incident at school. Some of the younger students wanted to play softball but the older students were playing ball and there weren't enough softballs to go around. So, we decided to use a stone. I was batting and my sister was pitching. I don't remember whether it was a wild pitch or I moved the wrong way but the stone hit me on the nose. I wound up with a broken nose. That ended our game. It was the very first pitch and we never played ball with a stone again."

"We had a girl's baseball team called the Rainbows. I don't know where the name 'Rainbows' came from, but I do remember that some of our opponents said it was because we didn't know enough to come in out of the rain."

One of the big events of Spring was the Field Day (or Sports Day). It was primarily an opportunity to compete against neighbouring schools in track and ball events but could also involve uniforms, banners, school yells and marching. Competition was obvious in both the individual events and the team games. The students took satisfaction in personal victories particularly if they led to their school winning the shield or trophy.

"Some of the memories I have of the days spent at our one room school house were the Friday afternoon ball games, sliding on the wooden floor and trying to give each other shocks, the huge Christmas trees (I think my dad supplied them) and Christmas concerts. [I remember] playing Fox and Goose in the snow and Duck Duck Goose, a little bit of soccer, and on the cold and rainy days playing in the basement - things like Red Light - Green Light and Mother May I."
