The preparations for burial were carried out by the volunteer members of the Chevra Kadisha (Burial Society). As the separation of the sexes was maintained even in death, it was the women of this organization who prepared their sisters for burial, although the men would serve as the pallbearers at the cemetery.
The chair of the Chevra Kadisha in Saint John has always been a male, but for a number of years, a husband and wife worked together on this mitzvah (good deed).
