We always seemed to have plenty to do. During the war, of course, there was lots of excitement and we were off from school quite a lot. After the Explosion the schools were closed for weeks, and the next year we had the outbreak of Spanish influenza, and the schools and churches and everything were closed again. We used to watch the troop trains go through, and there were lots of them. We'd run down the hill to the road and stand and wave to the soldiers, or count the cars in the long, long freight trains that went through.

The Basin was filled with ships. In those days the Basin would be frozen solid from Bedford right down to the Narrows (of course the ice would be broken on the outer edge to let the ships out). They were not frozen in like that in World War II. I remember a group of us skated right down to Rockingham and one of my vivid recollections is seeing a Norwegian sailor off one of the ships and he was out skating and wearing the skates that curled up in front. I had only seen them before in pictures in books. I had always had a favourite story, Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates, and that is what I thought of.
