The epilogue to the button boots story: A few days after the fight, Fred was faced with wearing the boots into Alliston. While walking down Victoria Street, he crowded his mother, hiding his boots in her long skirts. Noting his odd behaviour, she asked what was wrong. He told her the entire story and she said, "My dear child, why didn't you tell your mother?" and promptly bought him a pair of boy's boots.13
