This soap was handmade by Edward Banting's mother-in-law circa 1940. Donated by Edward to the Museum on the Boyne.

Marie Shields and Robert Douglas Banting discuss an "old fashioned threshing" at the Homestead:

Bob: The old fashioned threshing where everybody would come down…

Marie: All the neighbours.

Bob: You'd have to feed everybody.

Marie: And my mother always put on a white linen tablecloth.

Bob: For a whole bunch of farmers, that just got in from the threshing, that were full of dirt…

Don Shields (Marie's husband): Sweat.

B: And everything else. My goodness.

M: Traditionally it was the way farmers' wives did that. They were expected to do that.
