In October 2004, students from Smiths Falls Collegiate traveled to Europe to locate the gravesites of the soldiers whose names are found on the Smiths Falls cenotaph.

Students went into cemeteries such as Caberet Rouge, home of the Canada's unknown soldier who is now buried in Ottawa at Canada's National War Memorial at the intersection of Elgin and Wellington Street.

Charles L. Edmunds was from Smiths Falls. He is the first soldier from Smiths Falls to be killed in action. Edmunds dies on April 22, 1915 during the first gas attack used in the history of warfare. Charles L. Edmunds body was never found. His name is commemorated at Menin Gate in Ieper, Belgium.

Mouse Trap Farm was the fields where the many of 2nd battalion soldiers from Smiths Falls saw their first combat and died here. Five soldiers from Smiths Falls, who died here, are commemorated on the walls at Menin Gate 10 kilometers away in Ieper, Belgium.

While the students from Smiths Falls were in Europe they took part in the Menin Gate ceremony which takes place at 8:00pm every night since 1928.
