Upon careful scrutiny, each year the Commissioner's report replenished the minimum number of horses needed for each detachment. To transport a large number of animals, horses were ferried down the North Saskatchewan and distributed to various detachments.

Many times, the ferry was used to deliver the mounted police for duty to the other side of the North Saskatchewan in patrol of the Lamoureux settlement.
