THE FUTURE OF GRIMSBY: WINE AND WINERIES IN NIAGARA

THE GRIMSBY AND BEAMSVILLE WINE ROUTE

The shift in local farms has also been from growing fruits for processing and fresh markets, to growing grapes for wine, one of Niagara's few expanding agricultural industries. Farming has become nostalgic in Niagara with wineries becoming an integral part of the tourist industry. Grimsby and Beamsville are in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula Wine Industry and they are located on 'The Bench' which is located below the escarpment from Grimsby to St. Catharines. This area is known as one of the best grape growing regions in the world. The wineries in the Grimsby and Beamsville area include: Angels Gate Winery, Cornerstone Estate Winery, Crown Bench Wines, De Sousa Wine Cellars, EastDell Estates, Fielding Estate Winery, Kittling Ridge Estate Wines and Spirits, Legends Estate Winery, Magnotta Beamsville, Malivoire Wine Company, Mountain Road Wine Company, Peninsula Ridge Estates Winery, Puddicombe Estate Farms and Winery, Rosewood Estates Winery and Meadery, Thomas and Vaughan and Thirty Bench Wines. These wineries are along one of Ontario's 'Wine Routes' and can be visited for tours and tastings.

CROP PROTECTION WIND MACHINES

Another new tool used by Grimsby fruit and grape growers is wind machines to improve survival of tender fruit and grape plants during cold snaps. Usually fuelled by propane or diesel, wind machines pull warm air from ten or more metres above the field down to the crop level covering ten acres of fields. In the last few years many growers have chosen to invest in fans rather than risk losing crops.
