Incorporated in 1871 the St. Martins and Upham Railway Company began constructing a line from St. Martins to connect with the Intercolonial Railway line at Hampton in 1874. Finished in 1878 the line cost a total of $127,000 to build. The money-losing line changed hands several times but continued to run if only during the summer months because the line had no snow removal equipment. Eventually Canadian National acquired the line in 1918 and operated it until its abandonment in 1940. Given that the St. Martins economy was based almost entirely on shipbuilding, it is hard to understand how this line was ever supposed to make money.
