By 1893 Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley was regarded as a distinguished native son by his friends, supporters and even some poltical enemies. As the grand old man of New Brunswick politics, Tilley was consulted by John A. Macdonald from time to time but both men recognized that their generation was passing, and younger men were assuming power. Macdonald's death in 1891 was a deep blow; the two had been friends and allies for almost thirty years. In the late fall of 1893, Sir Samuel Leonard Tilley officially and finally retired from a lifetime of service to his province and country.
