Despite its isolation Vinemount was not culturally backward. In the early 20thc entury the area produced winning baseball teams (like the "Pinecrest Gang") and hosted a literary society in the former Mount Zion Church. The Pinecrest Literary Society was the brainchild of Walter Lee .

The Springstead family was another well-known name in Saltfleet prior to the Second World War.
Springsteads built many of the older houses in upper and lower Stoney Creek.

Tweedside never grew beyond a hamlet, despite having its own school, church, and shop. It was simply too isolated from the main routes, and not centrally-located enough to dominate local development.
