James Gillespie was a native of Moncton who became General Manager of the Malagash Salt Mine in 1938, until he retired in 1945.

DR. JOHN L. CAVANAUGH

Dr. John L. Cavanaugh a graduate of Dalhousie University, the Nova Scotia Technical College and an army captain, was involved with the Malagash Salt Mine from 1919.

When the operation was re-organized in 1948 as the Malagash Salt Company, J. L. Cavanaugh, who had been actively associated with the enterprise from the earliest days, acting as mine manager in 1945; became president, with George MacKay as a director.

JAMES R. WAUGH

James Waugh, a Malagash native, started at the Malagash Salt Mine in 1938. He was the Maintenance Superintendant and was responsible for keeping all the machinery at the mine moving. Waugh was responsible for developing a rotary filling machine in the early 1950's, which could fill 100lb bags of salt three at a time; which replaced the use of most the jute bags. James Waugh continued working at Malagash until the mine closed in 1959.

HUBERT (TIM) SMEDLEY

Hubert Smedley was an engineer with the Federal Bureau of Mines who began at the Malagash Salt Mine in 1941. It was under his direction that the Pilot Plant was built at Malagash in 1945, with the cooperation of both Federal & Provincial goverenments, the Nova Scotia Technical College and various Canadian industries; that produced a high quality fused salt in small commercial quantities.
Smedley became Manager in 1946, however the Pilot Plant ceased operations in 1947, due to the cost of the salt fusion process, and Smedley left the mine in 1948.

JOHN R. MACQUARRIE

John R. MacQuarrie was the Manager of the Malagash Salt Mine from 1947 until its closure in 1959. He then became Manager of the Canadian Salt Company in Pugwash until his retirement in 1976. John also compiled and edited the publication "Malagash Salt", first published in 1975, under the auspices of the North Cumberland Historical Society.

Charles Thurgood, a native of Syndey, Nova Scotia and a graduate of Dalhousie University, began at the Malagash Salt Mine in 1950 as an engineer.
