Ralph was badly burned when his tank was hit on D-Day, but returned to service. Allen worked for the Manitoba Pool elevator for a time after his discharge from the army.<br /> In 1928, after the death of their father, Florence took over the Mather store, moving the family back to Mather. The depression of the 1930's brought the business nearly to bankruptcy. Florence asked to get out, to save what she could.
