Interview with Llewellyn Smith - He explains How E.D. Smith Became Involved in the Fruit Shipping Business

At the time there were a lot of middlemen that had come I suppose from the Toronto area and they would contract growers right at the farm gate the farmer not realizing what profit he was giving up by selling directly to the middleman and E. D. understood that and he went to the farm growers through Helderleigh operation and said "Look we can collectively get a better price for our fruit if we sell directly to the retailers as opposed to the wholesalers who were bargaining at the farm gate." So I think in many ways Helderleigh helped expand the Niagara fruit industry, the Helderleigh operation.
