Recent Operations

Since that time the LSSR has maintained an active presence in Northwestern Ontario. Over 80 members of the unit have participated in peacekeeping and NATO operations in Egypt, the Golan Heights, Cyprus, Croatia and Bosnia. In 2004 1 officer and 9 other ranks served on operations in Afghanistan and South West Asia as part of Operation Athena. In 2005 the Regiment celebrated the 100th anniversary of its formation as the 96th Lake Superior Regiment, with a series of events. On New Year's Day, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable James Bartleman recognized the unit by hosting his Vice Regal Levee at the Thunder Bay Armoury. Later that June the City of Thunder Bay renamed a portion of Current River Park, "Military Field," in honour of the occasion. Coincidently, the park had been used by the 52nd Battalion as a training area on its mobilization in 1915. Again in 2006 1 officer and 3 other ranks served Afghanistan and South West Asia as part of Operation Archer. One of them, 21 year old Corporal Anthony Boneca, paid the ultimate sacrifice on 9 July 2006.
