Anne Fast's story of Teddy the dog.

My parents Henry and Anna Cornies, and their 3 children, lived on Centre Dyke Road. During the 40s, the Island pheasant hunt brought in much-needed cash for the Island families. My teenage brother Henry would act as guide for the hunters. One day while walking close to the beach, a pheasant flew up and the hunter shot it. It landed out on the water, too far for anyone to recover, so Henry sent his clever dog Teddy to fetch it. The dog swam out and carefully brought the bird to shore. The hunter was so impressed, he offered Henry $50 for the dog, but Henry would not part with Teddy. The dog also liked to pursue cars, and a short time after the pheasant incident, Ewald Wiebe drove by in his three-ton truck. Teddy ran out onto the road and under the wheels of the truck,and Henry needed to bury his faithful friend. So they were parted, after all.
