The Art of Wooden Boat Building - A Dying Skill - The Vokey Family

TRANSCRIPT

Excerpt of an interview with Henry Vokey by a Student Researcher. This excerpt discusses the reasoning behind why Henry chose Trinity to start his shipyard.

Hazel: Why did you build a shipyard? And why not do something else besides boat building?

Henry: Because ahh

Carrie: Because that's all you knew how to do.

Henry: Wha?

Carrie: Because that's all you knew how to do. [ laughter]

Henry: Yeah that's about right. I wanted to continue at that stuff ,

Hazel: Oh.

Henry: That's why.

Bonnie: Why did you use Trinity, why not Trinity East or somewhere else, did you look elsewhere, like when you were thinking about moving?

Henry: Well Trinity was about the best place especially in this arm over in Trinity East is more open like to the bay,

Bonnie: No shelter

Henry: No shelter no harbour because I was even up around Smith's Sound up around Monroe lookin' before we moved down here. And didn't think we could go in the same country but ahh there was no harbour up there.

Hazel: Oh ok.

Henry: And I didn't want to be in a place where it was almost a straight shore I wanted to be in a land lock place like down here.

Hazel: Oh ok.

Bonnie: Trinity was ahh pretty busy I guess back then.

Henry: Oh yeah. Trinity was one of the biggest places around on this area, clear of Bonavista.
