The History of Shipbuilding in Marystown, NL, Canada

 

 

TRANSCRIPT

Marystown Co-operative Enterprises Ltd., established in 1939 on 'The Beach' in Marystown. Due to the outbreak of World War II, they stopped building fishing trawlers here and built four magnetic minesweepers. The Jude, the Marticot, the Merasheen, and the Oderin - named for islands in Placentia Bay. These were the first warships to be built in Newfoundland.

This shipyard was destroyed by fire in 1941.
