The History of Shipbuilding in Marystown, NL, Canada

TRANSCRIPT

The Alberto Wareham was built at Creston North, Mortier Bay in 1952 by Thomas Hodder. Built for Freeman Wareham of Wareham's Business, Spencer's Cove, Placentia Bay. She was 134 feet long, 27.3 feet wide, 12.2 feet deep. At 243 gross tons, she is documented as the largest banking schooner ever built in Newfoundland, if not in the whole of the Atlantic provinces.

Her high sides made bank fishing very difficult, and after fishing only two years, she was used as a very successful freighter, until she was destroyed by fire in 1959.
