The History of Shipbuilding in Marystown, NL, Canada

TRANSCRIPT

In 1918, the first large-scale shipyard was begun at Stapleton's Point and Sandy Point on the North Side of Marystown. The type of schooners built were large 196 ton, 3 masted cargo carrying tern schooners known as the General Boats. Those were named for well-known war generals at the time. They were much in demand after World War I because of a world wide shipping shortage.
