School Yard Memories

General Currie School 1935 In 1935 my sister, MaryLou, and I attended General Currie School. MaryLou was in grade three and I was in grade one. Our teacher was Miss Chapman and our custodian was Mrs. Hammett. We enjoyed our schooling. We learned to read from the Jerry and Jane readers and did our arithmetic with Studebaker mathematics cards that we placed on our desks. We used the McLean Method of printing and writing. Being able to play with the plasticene that we rolled out on black cardboard boards on our desks rewarded us. I envied the grade threes because they could use their straight pens and use the inkwells in their desks. We lived on the corner of #3 Road and General Currie Road so we usually went home for lunch. How we envied our friends, who brought their lunches to school in syrup or honey pails. At recess we played on the swings, skipped rope, played alleys (marbles), hopscotch. allary, and other active games. The Fall was great fun as we piled the maple leaves from the schoolyard trees and jumped on the piles. I remember Miss Chapman taking us sliding on the ice in the drainage ditch in front of the school in January and February. In the spring the drainage ditch often overflowed on the road that was only one lane. We carefully walked the flooded roadway in our gumboots, often arriving at school with our boots full of water. Miss Chapman was a very kind teacher and always had little treats for us at special holiday times such as Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter. and Christmas. At Easter she gave each pupil an Easter Egg Cup. We kept ours for many years after we left General Currie School. We still cherish a great many fond memories of General Currie School.
