Summers By the Lake: The History of Grimsby Park

The Boys' TabernacleHarriet Phelps Youmans described the Boys' Tabernacle. "It was a neat little church on a street leading from Auditorium Circle to the lake shore." The Reverend Mr. Calvert used this building primarily for boys' meetings. Later it was also used for prayer meetings and religious classes. The Boys' Tabernacle was located close to the Auditorium but when the Temple was built, it was moved a short distance. In 1934, it was decided to enlarge the Boys' Tabernacle. The back wall was hinged so the wall could open out allowing an overflow of parishioners to be seated on the wooden porch. With the establishment of St. Philip's-by-the-Lake Anglican Church in 1951, the Boys' Tabernacle was used as a non-denominational church. A different clergyman representing various protestant faiths conducted the weekly Sunday morning service.
