Growing Up In Peterborough: A Century of Stories

TRANSCRIPT

Barb: My mom cooked. She was a really good cook, but we always had a maid. (She) cleaned the house, cooked, general housekeeping. I can remember coming home from school coming down Weller Street in the springtime and coming home and the house would be turned upside down with spring house cleaning. I mean they really, they did a job. We had a maid that, well we had one, I can't remember when another one came, but she stayed with us for about ten years or so. I mean she moved to the cottage with us in the summertime. We had live in help and this girl I believe lived in and she probably was from the country. At that time, and that's why people were able to have maids was because of girls living in the country and wanting to come to town. They would either come in and stay at the Y and get a job or they would do housework. But really, you know, they sort of became part of your family and I have nice memories growing up with them.
