Growing Up In Peterborough: A Century of Stories

TRANSCRIPT

Marlow: I didn't have any choice I just wanted to get a job. I saw an ad in the Examiner, 'Office Clerk Wanted at the Brinton Carpet'. I went down and Mr. Bill Ferguson was the Office Manager and he knew me through the Y, and because I had the education and he says, 'Well Marlow, you'll do. How's ten dollars a week sound?' After a month Miss Miller, Ethel Miller who was an old timer who lived on McDonnel Street across from PCI, she came down and laid down 2 two dollar bills and says, 'Marlow sign this chit for the petty cash'. And I said 'What's this for?' She said 'That's an extra dollar a week for carrying the mail'. I had to take the mail up to the post office on Hunter and Water and pick it up in the morning, they had a great big leather satchel. (edit) (1:48)
