The Founding of LaSalle:By 1749, there were fifty French farms on the south side of Detroit River. The Majority -thirty five in total- were sited north of River Canard, Beyond Turkey Creek. The more populated community was named Petite Cote in 1794 because of its smaller coastline when compared to that of the north shore. In 1924, the community was renamed LaSalle after the exployer. In 1959, LaSalle was amalgamated with Sandwich West Township. The Current Town of LaSalle was incorporated in 1991. LaSalle, the area formally known as Petite Cote, now holds the honour of being the "oldest continuous European settlement in Ontario".
