Bill Evans, Winemaker, Rockway Glen Winery - Explains that it is Very Important to Keep Growing Grapes Locally, the Wine Industry Depend on It
Now it is possible to ship grapes from other localities. One of the things about having grapes sit around, and you spend a lot of time trying to harvest them at just the right moment, and having them sit right after you harvest it, the grapes, the juice, everything begins to oxidize. The thing that is the most detrimental to grapes and to wine is the oxygen or the wrong amount of it at the wrong time, so it is important to protect your fruit from oxidation, and that is the biggest drawback about shipping grapes over large distances. So you want your grape industry and your wine industry in the same spot so you can get the freshest and best product.
