Interview with Tom Greensides, Grape Grower - Tom Explains the Changes in Grape Growing in Recent Years

We've seen many changes in the grape growing since I started. When I first started, why we used to till the soil, we would prune by hand and we would tie the grapes to the wires and so-on and that has all been changed. Now we grow the grapes so that they don't have to be tied. They are tied once when they are young and that stays, that's what happens. In pruning we have changed from hand pruning, we use a machine now which cuts off the excess wood and we've done that now for seven or eight years and we no longer till the soil. We manage the natural vegetation and it allows bigger vines, better water penetration and all sort of good things and it costs a lot less to do.
