Interview with Llewellyn Smith, E.D. Smith Cherry Farm - He Explains the Benefits of Pick-Your-Own Farms

Now people might ask, "what is the benefit of pick- your- own farms?" For the consumer that comes to pick their own they get fresh fruit that is their choice of fresh fruit that they would like. It is a self choice. And they liked being outside with nature. Many of our customers come from the city. So it is a half day to come from Toronto or Mississauga to pick fruit and bring your family to enjoy what Niagara has to offer. For the farmer, customers generally pick the entire crop. They go in and they clean the tree. There is no need for sorting and packing, you don't have the concern of your customers not taking the product, or it is backing up, you don't need to have refrigerated transport, or shipping, or all of those problems.
