Interview with Mrs Jeanette Arkell, WWII Farmerette - Most Girls Became Farmerettes to Get Out of their Exams

Well, when I was that age, you could get your grade thirteen by going on the farm. Well I went to a girl's school so I couldn't get out of any exams or anything. I had to try my exams, so I came out, I think it was in the first of July and some of the girls stayed the whole summer. If they were getting their year, they had to stay two months, I think.
