Interview with Jean Peterson, Nee Nelles - Jean Describes the Rush to Get the Fresh Fruit to the Fruit Train
And there was always a race because you wanted to get as much as you could out on the train as possible and we could hear, because we lived east of town, we could hear the train and we figured it was the fruit train. And we would try and get the last little bit on and we would go up there, and you had to be careful, like if you were really racing the train you would have to come up through town because sometimes they closed the gate and you couldn't get across the track to get over to where we put the fruit on. But usually the train stopped because there was a water tower. And they stopped for water and that was just east of the crossing and so you could usually take the chance that you were going to be ok.
