Cobourg's fortunes were lost in an ill fated enterprise to construct a railway from Cobourg to Peterborough across Rice Lake. The railway ran for a few years, but the constant repairs to the wooden tressles across the lake and the perception of danger lead to the company declaring bankrupcy and lost many local fortunes.
