Paul Kane's Cobourg 1833-1834

The earliest roads were the corduroy roads built with logs and laid crosswise over swampy areas. The roads were uneven and notorius for the bone rattling experience a trip could be. It took many years before gravel and crushed stone was used in sufficient quantity to make the road surface smoother. Bridges were often burned or washed out with spring flooding - making travel a better experience in winter than in summer. Snow and ice made sleigh travel possible and more comfortable.
