Paul Kane's Cobourg 1833-1834

In 1832 construction began on Victoria College - the Methodist Academy. The presence of the institution in the community did much to stimulate the establishment of other schools. The college also brought many learned men (primarily) to the community to teach. The college offered a wide range of programs, not just theology. It accepted both men and women as students. When the College moved to Toronto to become an affiliate of the University of Toronto, the building became a hospital for the mentally ill.
