Frances Stewart , whose letters were published in 1889 under the title "Our Forest Home" visited Cobourg twice in the early part of the 19th century. She describes the pleasures of Cobourg society, in the absence of her husband, who had gone north to Peterborough County in search of property. Stewart describes afternoon teas, dancing, sleighing parties all of which were attended in the very latest of fashion. Women of Cobourg did not lack for money and were dressed in smart suitable style.
