Paul Kane came to Canada as a young man, from Ireland. He came with his family to live in Toronto near the Don River. Paul attended the York District Grammar School and received art instruction, on a part-time basis from the art master at Upper Canada College. At sixteen he was apprenticed to William Conger as a furniture painter.
