Sliding, Gliding and Soaring: A history of skiing in Revelstoke, British Columbia

TRANSCRIPT

At that time it was the wild west, like, anybody could go anywhere except National Parks. There was no regulations, there was nothing. Obviously you wouldn't go and start a new heliskiing area in somebody else's area, existing area. But all the rest was open... nobody else skied as far as I know, in the area. But you ask me before when the government permits came in. And that actually happened because we started an association, all the existing heli-ski operators started an association. And we realized it would be in our interest to have a designated area where we would have no conflicts with other operators on safety issues. So we went and lobbied the government to get these tenures in place. It finally happened in '83, was the first tenures. Before that there was a fight, about meetings for about three years to get it established and part of that would be to straighten out our areas, if there were any overlaps. We had our areas totally straightened out before we approached the government. That made it a lot easier.
