Residential Schools: The Red Lake Story

Role of Teachers

  • Very few qualified teachers were at most schools from the dates the schools were established until 1950.
  • Some of the teachers at these schools although educated were not officially qualified.
  • This is particularly true of priests and brothers who taught at the schools run by their respective churches.
  • It was difficult to get a qualified teacher at many of the residential schools due to the poor pay.
  • Teachers could get a salary of $400.00 per year at day schools in urban centers, but would only get $300.00 per year at the residential schools.
  • As a result the teachers at residential schools seemed to be under qualified and could not get a job elsewhere.
  • Curriculum

  • In 1896 the Department published a curriculum, or Programme of Studies for Indian Schools.
  • This curriculum was used in the schools until about the 1930s, when principals were expected to use the curriculum established by the province.
  • The 1896 Programme consisted of five broad subjects:
  • English, General Knowledge, Writing, Arithmetic, and Geography with a Standard for each level.
