Residential Schools: The Red Lake Story

Repairs

  • Although completed in the spring of 1925, numerous items were still required by the school, which was overlooked when the school was being planned.
  • The septic tank that was installed initially drained into the main body of the lake.
  • Complaints were made by residents of the lake and eventually the problem was corrected.
  • The roof at the back of the school started leaking as it had not been tarred and graveled.
  • The finish on the cement floor in the playrooms was very rough resulting in children scraping and bruising themselves.
  • The bread oven did not cook bread very well because it could not reach adequate temperatures.
  • No plans for an ice house to store ice for the summer or for a root cellar to store vegetables grown in the school garden were made.
  • Safety

  • No fire escapes were installed when the school was built.
  • After fire escapes were suggested by the Oblate Order, these along with extinguishers and other equipment such as fires hoses, fire guns, buckets, fire axes and pump tanks were supplied to the school.
  • In 1933 when the small fires extinguishers called 'fire guns' were refilled and tested it was discovered that nine out of ten were unusable.
