Blanche Coultis: Pioneering Country Teacher
Brooks and District Museum
Brooks , Alberta

   Our exhibit features
pictures and writings from
the collection of Blanche
Coultis, a former one-room
school teacher in Alberta
during late 1930s and early
‘40s. Pictures of her
childhood at Steveville,
Alberta, are included. One
storyline details Blanche’s

experiences living in
teacherages associated with
one-room schools. A dedicated
teacher, she concluded her
career as vice-principal of
the Brooks Composite High
School in 1977. We’ve used
high school yearbooks to
document her dedication to
helping students in English,

French, and photography.
   Our exhibit also features
pictures of artifacts from
the Kitchner Schoolhouse
located at the Brooks and
District Museum. Many
artifacts in this schoolhouse
have been gifted to the
museum from various schools

in southern Alberta. During
her teaching career, Blanche
became a pioneering board
member of the Brooks and
District Museum. In this
volunteer position, she

the museum displays. One
