In 1886, the family moves into a new, stately residence built in 1853. The height of the house is increased by the addition of a third floor. This is done to make room for a private office for Charles-Alfred, as well as to provide space for the post office and a room for the telephone and telegraph.

The end of 1890 will be tragic for the Desjardins family. Little Marie-Léontine dies at an early age. Charles-Alfred's attachment to his family makes this a very hard blow to take. Marie-Léontine, his darling Maria, is only 13 years old. However, this terrible loss will not be the last he will have to endure. Two of his other daughters will die before he does.
