People generously shared their expertise in boat building with novice builders. Harry Roberts taught Evans and his friend Johnny Johnson some techniques about boat building and they in turn passed on their knowledge to some of the young men that had left work camps and arrived on the West Coast looking for work. This didn't sit well with the Managers of the work camps organized for the unemployed.

Evans was a commercial fisherman from the early 1930's until the mid 1940's. He used his boat to provide an income for his family when his writing sales were low. After Evans stopped commercial fishing, the family still used the boat for pleasure fishing and travelling the coastline.

Evans and his wife Anna spent 9 years in Northern British Columbia where Anna was a teacher on an Indian Reserve. From this experience, Evans would write his insightful novel, "Mist on the River" about a young native man's conflict between the traditional life he had know and the life of the white man. While writing novels Evans still had time to write newspaper articles on a wide range of topics including his own life.

During his later years, Evans had several books of his poetry published. He would use the tape recorder to record his poems and then have them transcribed for review.
