Salute to our Veterans

Salute to our Veterans

Station Cultural Centre, Town of Okotoks Museum and Archives 2009

This exhibit celebrates veterans from Okotoks and District: those from here, and those who moved here in later years. Four of this exhibit’s storylines, Remembering Our Fallen Heros, Letters From the Frontlines, Amazing Stories, and The Homefront, draw from our large database of information on veterans from the region. In Remembering Our Fallen Heros, we have used a selection of video clips to introduce silent, commemorative pictures and text. It shows how the Okotoks community remembers its veterans. The remaining three storylines use image and sound narration exclusively. Voices were provided by volunteers from the Okotoks community and staff of the Town of Okotoks.

Our source materials are based on a collection of photographs created by Mrs. B. Hole, of Okotoks. Her mission was to take pictures of enlisted men and women before they left for training or deployment. These pictures are very precious, as some are the very last taken of soldiers before they died. The Okotoks Review, the town’s local newspaper, was used to help research the stories of local people at home and overseas. Interviews with five veterans helped to fill in some of the gaps.

Our virtual exhibit is an important component of our physical exhibit, which is filled with war memorabilia, artefacts from World War II personnel, and 28 framed posters from the Canadian Fallen Heros Foundation. It can be viewed in the storyline called The Rest of the Story.
