In the 19th century, it became increasingly difficult for the Abenakis to live from their hunting, fishing and trapping. This traditional way of life was threatened by colonization and the emergence of the forest industry. In order to survive, the Abenakis had to find other activities.
The sale of handicraft products, especially weaving, became a very important aspect of the economy of the village of Odanak. Numerous men became involved in ash tree transformation and women weavers made baskets that were sold in the United States. The scope of this lucrative commercial trade prompted the American government to impose customs duties on Natives crossing the border to sell their products. Once again, the Abenakis must adapt and diversify their economic activities.
In 1885, a provincial law governing the creation of hunting and fishing clubs is enacted, and large parts of ancient Abenakis hunting territories are sold or rented. The men of Odanak see this as an opportunity to find work. Their expertise in hunting and fishing and their keen knowledge of forestland north of the Saint-Lawrence River make them perfect guides for hunting and fishing sportsmen of the new clubs. These rich Canadian and American clients prefer hiring Abenakis guides since they are well acquainted with the rivers, portages, and locations to find different species of fish and game. This work enabled many Abenakis to ensure the livelihood of their families and to live in close accordance with their ancestral ways of life. They plied this profession in Haute-Mauricie and the Laurentian Park from 1880 until 1960, contributing to the fame of private clubs such as the Laurentian Club, which catered to many celebrities.
This exhibition is an homage to the guides of this era. It recounts their work, anecdotes and life in Odanak, their native village.
We hope that you will enjoy this exhibit, that it will make you discover the world of the odowinno, an Abenakis term meaning guide and person of quality. All the former guides interviewed confirmed that their work was harsh and poorly paid, but that it was a good life to be surrounded by so much beauty and peace.
And now, follow the guide!
