Chronicles of Bentley

Chronicles of Bentley

Bentley Museum 2011

It is our goal to relate the history of our charming town. Bentley, Alberta lies like a jewel in the beautiful Blindman Valley, a geographic feature that caught the attention of many of the early pioneers. A spectacular view greets you as you enter the town from the east. Immediately before you is the Town of Bentley and in the distance are the famous “Sunset Hills”. On a clear day, you can also see the snow capped Rocky Mountains. You are treated to equally magnificent views when you top the rim of the valley from the south or west.

In 1899, Major William McPherson and his sons purchased homesteads, land that is now the centre of our town of Bentley. The McPherson’s operated a store and built a cheese factory. Read how they influenced the growth of the town and its people.

We will share with you the stories of the hardships, joys and difficulties these early pioneers faced and how they coped with the elements that shaped their way of life. You will see how a ravaging fire in the early 1900s destroyed the business section on one side of Main Street. As a result of this devastating fire, the infrastructure of Main Street was changed and our Main Street became the envy of many other towns.

Follow our featured stories that include the topics of homes, schools, stores, hotels, businesses, arrival of the railroad, medical services, transportation and stopping houses. We have featured documents and pictures pertaining to the different eras and the effect on the population and the economy. You will see pictures and related stories of the citizens of Bentley and their achievements in many diversified areas and read interesting tidbits about the folk of Bentley and surrounding areas waiting anxiously for the “Chautauqua” groups to arrive.

We have featured two videos with audio and associated text. In one, the Bentley Museum Society’s historian relates her life in Bentley and her involvement in the community as she grew up. After graduating, she enlisted in the Canadian Air Force. The second is a history of “our heroes” – the Bentley Generals hockey team. The assistant coach of the Generals relates the team’s successes and their determination to win the Allen Cup.

Included in our presentation, are two poems written by people of Bentley. We have included audio with these compositions for your enjoyment.
