Often referred to as the \u201cCradle of French civilization in North America\u201d or the \u201cBreadbasket of Qu\u00e9bec,\u201d C\u00f4te-de-Beaupr\u00e9 was colonized rapidly by the French in the 17th century. While it was originally prized for its fertile land and known for its pilgrimage to Saint Anne, it wasn\u2019t until the 19th and 20th centuries that this region located east of Qu\u00e9bec City saw its economy begin to diversify.<\/p>\n
Ch\u00e2teau-Richer, one of the oldest villages in Qu\u00e9bec, sits in the heart of C\u00f4te-de-Beaupr\u00e9. It was the seat of the Beaupr\u00e9 Seigneury, as well as the first parish in the region.<\/p>\n
But the history of Ch\u00e2teau-Richer and the \u201cCoste des beaux pr\u00e9s\u201d is that, above all, of the 170 or so founding families that settled there. It is the history of generations of women and men who played a role in its development.<\/p>\n
With this exhibit, Aux Trois Couvents seeks to celebrate the oft-forgotten figures who left their mark on Ch\u00e2teau-Richer and its region. Step back in time and discover these people\u2014some unassuming, others illustrious\u2014who were pioneers, farmers, members of the clergy, artists, artisans\u2026<\/p>\n
Today, Ch\u00e2teau-Richer looks back at them.<\/p>\n
